Materiality and SDGs
"Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" adopted by the United Nations in September 2015 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” have a lot to do with Cataler’s management philosophy in terms of aiming for a sustainable society. We examined the relationship between the priority issues, or materialities that we consider important and the 17 goals and 169 targets of the SDGs which we aim to achieve by 2030, and identified 3 priority issues for Cataler to address using the evaluation axis of "impact on society" x "relevance to business".
Decrease in the number of diseases caused by air pollution
The company we should be.
We contribute to reducing the number of diseases caused by air pollution by expanding sales of our main product, automotive exhaust gas purification catalysts.
Specific initiatives
Expand business by providing new value
- ・Develop new technologies and manufacturing methods for automotive catalysts
- ・Increased orders from existing customers due to stricter exhaust gas regulations
- ・Strengthen sales in India and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations: Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia)
Reducing environmental impact in the value chain
When Cataler manufactures and sells products, the four main factors that have a negative impact on the environment are: (1) carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, (2) waste generation, (3) factory wastewater, and (4) use of precious metals. For these 4 items, we will promote initiatives to minimize environmental impact.
The company we should be.
Minimize the environmental impact caused by manufacturing and selling products.
Specific initiatives (1)
Reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
- ・Switch from gas to electric heat treatment & use renewable energy
- ・Photovoltaic power generation by installing solar panels
- ・Purchase electricity generated by renewable energy from electric power companies
Photovoltaic power generation
- SDGs Target: 13
- Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
Achievements and targets

- 2023achievements
- 2.8% reduction
(compared to 2013)
- 2030targets
- 61% reduction
(compared to 2013)
- (*)CO2 emissions in 2013 were 45,058 tons/year. We aim to reduce emissions by 61% for the whole Cataler Group by 2030.
Efforts toward carbon neutrality (*)
Combining Energy conservation + Energy generation + Technological innovation to achieve goals
- ・Energy conservation: Under the initiative of the Energy Conservation Subcommittee, CO2 reduction is being revised from 2%/year to 3%/year.
- ・Energy generation: Introduced photovoltaic power generation at Headquarters in Japan and the factory in Thailand. In future, it is planned to introduce this globally.
- ・Technological innovation: Significant reduction of CO2 through development of new industrial processes.
CO2 offset technology
- ・Development of CO2 recovery catalysts
- ・Development of methanation catalysts
- ・Development of hydrogen generation technology
- (*)What is carbon-neutral?
- It means balancing greenhouse gas emissions and absorption. In October 2020, the Japanese government declared its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero overall.
Specific initiatives (2)
Waste reduction
- ・Paperless materials
- ・Reduce product defect rate
- ・Change to recyclable packaging
Utilization of electronic check sheets
- SDGs Target: 12.5
- By 2030, substantially reduce waste emissions through prevention, reduction and recycling (reuse).

- ・Various catalyst (automotive, motorcycle, etc.) products and materials (powders, chemicals, etc.) are converted into representative catalyst products, and calculated on a per-unit basis.
All products and materials have conversion factors, and the amount of waste generated per 1,000 units is calculated based on the results.
